HIPS, known in Chinese as polyethylene, is a widely used general-purpose plastic. Today, the casings of everyday household appliances we commonly use are made precisely from polyethylene. Moreover, many common household plastic products, toys, and similar items are also made from polyethylene.
HIPS plastic resin, which boasts excellent impact resistance, also offers advantages such as ease of processing, superior performance, and low cost. As a result, it is widely used in the manufacture of various daily-use and industrial products. Its primary application areas include packaging, instrumentation, household appliances, toys and entertainment products, as well as the construction industry—particularly prominent applications can be found in food packaging materials and tableware. Specific applications span everyday household items, common packaging containers, stationery, vending machines, and products such as cups, lids, plates, and bowls—for example, dinner plates, bottle caps, safety razors, and pens—all of which are disposable items that constitute a significant segment of HIPS’s high-consumption market.
In recent years, the development of HIPS plastic raw material products has shifted toward specialty grades. The newly developed HIPS products have already matched engineering resins in certain application fields, and some even surpass the quality of existing products. Instrumentation and consumer electronics represent one of the rapidly growing markets for HIPS products, covering applications such as small instruments, refrigerator inner walls and internal components, television sets, air-conditioning parts, office equipment, and audio-video tapes. Among these, super-HIPS resin has widely replaced high-priced engineering plastics, while HIPS materials boasting both ultra-high impact resistance and high-temperature durability can even be used in automotive interior components.
A point of comparison is that HIPS plastic is an inexpensive engineering plastic; however, compared to ABS, PC/ABS, and PC, HIPS exhibits poorer gloss and overall performance. Its overall performance falls short of that of materials such as ABS and PC/ABS. Moreover, among engineering plastics, HIPS has relatively lower impact resistance. Therefore, when using this material, we should pay particular attention to testing its impact resistance.
